Advanced Task Scheduler is a multifunctional task scheduler, which allows you to automate all your day-to-day tasks: launch programs, scripts and batch files, open documents and web pages, display popup messages/reminders, play sounds, send network and e-mail messages, shut down and restart your computer, establish and close network connections, perform FTP and file operations.
Advanced Task Scheduler offers a full set of scheduling tools that allow you to run scheduled tasks automatically, as a one-off, a specified time after system startup, or secondly to yearly. Alternatively, set tasks to run via a hotkey, on computer idle, on network connection being established, on user log-on/off, program start/stop.

What do you need to know about free software?

At a client's site, I have created several basic scheduled tasks on a new HP computer they have just purchased (not from me) that is running 64 bit Windows 10 Home. All these scheduler tasks run perfectly on demand, and on schedule.

However, I cannot tweak any of their properties. When I click on the 'OK' (even without making any changes at all), it issues a pop-up error message:

An error has occurred for task <the name of the task being editing>.

Error message: One or more of the specified arguments are not valid.

This error message is pretty unhelpful, and 30 minutes entering things into search engines and reading through likely results, hasn't turned up anything helpful either.

I have considerable experience with Task Scheduler in Windows 7 and XP, and have done a few with Windows 8. (This is my first experience with Windows 10 scheduler.) However I can't see any problems with the changes that I am attempting to make, or to the existing task settings (if I don't make any changes at all).

This error appeared when I attempted to tweak the task settings immediately after creating them. It continues after re-booting the computer and signing in again as the same user (that created the tasks). My user account has full administrator privileges. It is an old-style user account on the computer, rather than a 'Microsoft account'.

In all cases, the tasks are pretty simple: They merely run a *.bat file that is located in a folder on a second partition of the local hard disk (which it Windows 10 sees as Drive E:). The path to that folder is included in the target 'Program/script' box. They are set to run 'Weekly' on Monday to Friday. But a 'Daily' test task (that I set up while diagnosing this) also issues the same error when I click on 'OK'.

Once again, all the tasks run perfectly both on schedule and on demand. I just can't tweak their settings, because it spits the dummy on clicking 'OK' - and doesn't save the changes.

I have set up a test scheduler task on a new computer (64 bit) I have just purchased for myself. I can tweak the task properties no trouble at all here on my computer. (It also has an old-style user account rather than 'Microsoft account'.) However, it does have Win 10 Pro, and I have installed the generic version downloaded from Microsoft. (The Windows 10 on my client's computer will be an HP OEM version - and the old adage 'HP hardware is brilliant, but their software is ****' may have some relevance here.)

Does anyone know what might be causing this issue on the computer concerned, and how to get past it?
