Important for aspiring Schmitt enthusiasts, but otherwise not recommended. Relevant for his ideas on dictate and necessary action not based in legislation, but in sovereignty. Mostly a historical work.

The beginning of this book is excellent and really sets forth a theory of dictatorship. Most of the rest of the book is a history of dictatorship. This part of the book was weak and was in serious need of editing. Many times I was asking myself 'what is the point here?' At the end there is Schmitt's discussion on Article 48 of the Weimar constitution, which he interpreted as giving the Reichs President dictatorial powers.
